DeJesus helps Royals edge BoSox
Baseball Betting Lines
05/27/2010 -
Boston, MA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - David DeJesus went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI,
including the eventual game-winner in the sixth, as the Royals slowed down the
surging Red Sox, 4-3, in the opener of a four-game set.
Boston came into the game winners in eight of its last nine and fresh off a
three-game sweep of division-leader Tampa Bay, but Brian Bannister (4-3) held
the Sox to three runs on nine hits over six frames to earn the win, the
Royals' second in a row after three straight losses.
Robinson Tejeda and Blake Wood both hurled a perfect inning of relief to
maintain a one-run lead in front of Joakim Soria, who retired the side in
order in the ninth for his 12th save of the season.
Daisuke Matsuzaka (3-2) allowed just two hits but tied a career-high with
eight walks while being charged with three earned runs in the loss. The subpar
start came five days after the right-hander had a no-hitter spoiled with four
outs remaining against the Phillies.
Bill Hall hit a solo shot and J.D. Drew went 3-for-4 with a run scored in
defeat.
Matsuzaka worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fourth to keep it a
scoreless game, and Boston scored in the bottom half thanks to a lucky break.
After Kevin Youkilis' one-out single, Drew hit a one-hopper up the middle that
hit umpire Paul Schrieber, who was stationed in front of second base. The
possible inning-ending double-play ball turned into a single, and Adrian
Beltre followed with a base hit to left to score Youkilis.
Kansas City went ahead in the fifth despite recording only one hit. A pair of
walks left runners on first and second with one out for DeJesus, who singled
to center to tie the game.
Matsuzaka walked Billy Butler and Jose Guillen to force in a run, and after a
fielder's choice, a wild pitch got far enough away from Jason Varitek to plate
Butler for a 3-1 game.
Joe Nelson relieved Matsuzaka after another bases on balls and got Jason
Kendall to fly out with the bases loaded.
Hall's leadoff homer in Boston's next at-bat cut the deficit to 3-2, and
DeJesus and Varitek traded run-scoring doubles off the Green Monster in the
sixth to keep it a one-run contest.
Game Notes
Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury was out of the lineup for a third straight
game because of soreness in his left side...Bannister came into the game 0-4
with a 5.87 earned-run average in four career starts against Boston...Kansas
City had lost seven of eight at Fenway Park coming into the game.
and J.D. Drew went 3-for-4 with a run scored in
defeat.

Elite 8 NCAA Tournament Betting at online sportsbook MySportsbook.com
In what should be an outstanding Saturday of March Madness betting action, the top four teams in the South and West Regions square off in what should be extremely close match-ups. Three of the four teams are coming off extremely close games on Thursday evening, only UCLA won semi comfortably over Pitt 64-55.
Ohio State is coming off their second game in a row where in all reality they should have lost. Of course that doesn’t matter now since the name of the game is “survive and advance” but as the tournament continues, they can’t afford to keep getting down to their opponents early. Kansas also avoided a scare by holding off a scrappy Southern Illinois squad. In the third thrilling game of the evening Memphis pulled off the minor upset (+3.5) despite being the higher seed to Texas A&M.
Although the spreads are fairly small for Saturday’s games, MySportsbook.com continue to bet against the underdogs. Despite OSU’s two scares, 86% of the “betting public” feels the Buckeyes (-1.5) have what it takes to make the Final Four. In fact, so much of the early money is on OSU that the line has already moved from -1 to -1.5. In the second game of the doubleheader, Kansas and their high-powered offense are 2 point favorites as they take on UCLA and their effective defense. About 63% of the early money thus far is once again backing the favorites. If those percentages stay that high, don’t be surprised if this line moves as well. If you like Kansas (-2) you might want to jump on it early.
Memphis vs. Ohio State
Both squads were involved in thrillers on Thursday evening and should come out fired up. OSU can ill afford to get behind early like they did versus their previous two opponents (Xavier, Tennessee). Greg Oden needs to stay out of foul trouble; the Buckeyes are a completely different team when he is on the court. Memphis definitely has the athleticism and length to match-up with OSU. Of Memphis’ five leading minute earners, the shortest of the bunch is 6’5”. Each team has a very effective defense; Memphis surrenders 62.3 PPG whereas the Buckeyes give up only 61 PPG. With those type of numbers, it isn’t surprising that Memphis covered the UNDER almost 69% of the time this season. As a favorite, OSU has covered the UNDER almost 66% of the time over the last three seasons. The major concern for Memphis which is magnifies this time of the year is their brutal foul shooting (62%). This season, OSU is 17-11 ATS versus teams with a winning record and 7-2 ATS in all tournament games. Memphis has been an extremely reliable cover in tournament play in recent years with a 23-8 ATS record over the last three seasons.
UCLA vs. Kansas
In the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, UCLA will play in a role which they are very unfamiliar with that of the underdog. Only twice this season have they been getting points from the handicappers and both times they covered. Over the last three seasons UCLA is a reliable 23-7 ATS in this unfamiliar role. UCLA has not fared well against Big 12 opponents recently going 1-7 ATS since 1997. Giving up only 59.6 PPG, UCLA will definitely look to do what they do best: keep this game as low scoring as possible. Their defense has been especially tough during the tournament. UCLA opponents have been able to muster up only 48.7 PPG while shooting a combined 34.5% from the field. UCLA definitely has a challenge at hand with a Kansas team that is capable of putting points on the board in bunches. As a team, they average 79 PPG and shoot an impressive 49.6% from the field and 39.4% from beyond the arc. During the tournament Kansas has been “lights out” from the field having shot 56.2%.

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship. Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92. After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points. Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1. Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years. With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed. UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern. Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier. OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak. Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four. It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta. But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
